Oops!!!!! Distracted mommy moment

So, I was driving south on the 405 from running errands in Newport and just thinking about life when I look in my rear view mirror and notice that Boston is CLIMBING OUT OF HIS CAR SEAT!!!!! It slowly occurs to me that this doesn't seem quite right. Than it hits (very quickly) me that I forgot to buckle him in!!!! As I'm frantically looking for an exit and exiting as fast and safely as possible he slowly moves around the back seat and sits next to his car seat with a big "This is really cool" smile on his face. I pull into a gas station and try to stop shaking and kicking myself for being so absent minded. As I struggle to buckle him in (he really wanted to stay sitting in the seat) I think about how I grew up and how our parents didn't have car seats and we would just sit in the back seat. My parents always had a volvo wagon growing up and on road trips they would fold down the seats and put a mattress down and we would lay down and play on the mattress the entire trip. I can't even comprehend doing that today, but it sure sounds like fun.

Jess I have done almost the exact same thing! I put Ellie in her car seat and buckled her in, but as I am going down the interstate I have to slam on my breaks and Ellie's car seat completly starts going forward.....I DIDN'T BUCKLE HER CAR SEAT TO THE CAR!!!! We had recently moved her car seat and I completly forgot to LATCH it back to the car when I put it in. She was so scared and was holding herself up with her hands on the head rest of the front seat. OOPS!

I did that with Poppy a couple of weeks ago, I was just driving a short trip and all the sudden Poppy climbs into the front seat with a huge smile. Ahhh.. anyway she thought it was cool too.

We did that with Kayci too, only she was just a coulpe of months old and couldn't go anywhere. It looks like (from all of these comments) that you are in good company!

We have all done crazy stuff - so just forgive yourself! My Mom had a Volvo wagon too and I totally remember being way too free back there as a kid too! Oh how times have changed!

Well at least you noticed that he got out of his car sear. Imagine if you got home and he was sitting in the seat next to his car seat, grinning when you came to get him. (of course, the chances of Boston "sitting quitely" until you got home is probably not very likely, eh :) We all know Boston is a mover and shaker!
